Seven new volunteers at Home-Start Chichester and District

Seven new volunteers at Home-Start Chichester and District

We were pleased to welcome seven new wonderful volunteers to our amazing volunteer team.

The volunteers have taken part in a seven week preparation course, which covers all aspects of volunteering with Home-Start; we discussed how to support and understand the needs of families and children, listening skills, early childhood development and the importance of play and positive parent-child relationships, safeguarding and boundaries and also how Home-Start operates as an organisation. The course is enjoyable and interactive, with plenty of opportunity to share and reflect upon the life experiences that make our volunteers so uniquely able to support families.

Home-Start volunteers do incredible work supporting families in their own homes, in a way that is often unseen by the wider community. Families who receive the support of a Home-Start volunteer often describe the experience as life changing or even lifesaving. It’s an amazingly rewarding volunteer experience and offers the chance for volunteers to make a real and life-long difference to people’s lives.

Volunteers can also:

  • Support families at our five family groups around the Chichester District
  • Support with local fundraising and community events
  • Provide one off support to families

Our next volunteer training course starts in January 2026. Places are limited to 8 people. The course lasts 7 weeks and takes place once a week on Tuesday mornings at the Chichester Family Hub.

Trip to Beaky’s Forest!

Trip to Beaky’s Forest!

Home-Start families enjoyed a wonderful trip to Dell Quay to explore Beaky’s forest on the 15th of May 2025.

The event was kindly funded by the Chichester Harbour Conservancy Education Centre. This connection is well established, and we have been fortunate enough to be supported by them for the last four years.

The families enjoyed a lovely, guided walk along the sea wall which led to a ‘secret’ area which is just perfect for exploring. The children had fun searching for painted rocks and pond-dipping, finished off with some singing.

Jane and Mary from the Harbour Conservancy are so knowledgeable about the local area and were able to talk with parents and children and answer any questions they had.

Along with Home-Start Chichester & District staff, we were joined by 4 of our amazing volunteers who supported the families throughout and some provided much needed transport for families.

A great day was had by all, and we hope to return in the Autumn!

Spring has Sprung!

Last month we held several Easter-themed family events: one in Chichester Bishops Palace Gardens – a secret gem, right in the heart of the city—and another to support the families in the north of the district. We were blessed with gorgeous, sunny weather and around 40 people attended each time.

For families who are anxious and rarely take their children outside, our events are a low-key, friendly way of introducing them to new areas and socialising with our staff, volunteers, and other families. It’s a really positive first step in getting them out the house, into green spaces and building their own supportive social network.

A family from overseas, who had been facing a difficult period marked by discrimination, attended the Easter event with their volunteer. This challenging time had left them feeling unsafe in their own home and isolated in a country where they know few people. However, they had a wonderful experience at our Chichester event with their little boy running around joyfully searching for the eggs!   We are very grateful to Rotary Chichester Harbour for donating the Easter eggs for our various events.

What’s new?

We also have several new volunteers starting this month, following their period of training. The volunteers are trained by our Manager, Lois Rowlands, during a 7-week preparation course. It’s interactive and enjoyable: one volunteer described it as ‘life-changing’. The training encourages the volunteers to think deeply about other people’s situations and the helping relationship they’re about to embark upon. Our dedicated volunteers are the lifeblood of Home-Start Chichester & District, and we are so thankful to them.

We are also delighted to welcome our new Play Leader, Ruby Cartwright, to the team this month. She brings energy and enthusiasm to the role and she’s already settling in nicely.

Our course for parents ‘Understanding Your Child,’ has just started. This course follows the Solihull Approach which is an evidence-based programme that encourages parents to reflect on their own, often challenging, childhood experiences to understand how these might influence their interactions with their children. By learning to observe their child, they can better understand their needs. This understanding helps create empathy, reduces the likelihood of harm, and fosters healthy, secure attachments, building happier families.

The course would not be possible without the creche, which is currently being run by our volunteers, one of whom is qualified  in Level 3 Early Years Childcare. This is fantastic but in order for this to be sustainable long-term, we will need to secure funding for a dedicated external creche organisation.

We look forward to sharing our summer newsletter with you. In the meantime, thank you to all our supporters. We couldn’t help families in Chichester District to thrive without you.

Five new volunteers join Home-Start Chichester & District

Five new volunteers join Home-Start Chichester & District

We welcomed five new volunteers to our fantastic volunteer team this week

The volunteers took part in a seven week preparation course which covered all aspects of volunteering with Home-Start. We looked at the history and ethos of Home-Start, listening skills, how volunteers can help families, the importance of play for young children, the factors that make parenting difficult for families, sources of local support, safeguarding and the importance of confidentiality. The course is enjoyable and invites a lot of participation from everyone involved.

The volunteers will then choose to volunteer either in our popular and active family groups, or be matched with a family to support the family in their own home.

The next volunteer preparation course will be starting on the 9th September 2025, and we are in the process of receiving applications now.

Chichester City Council recognises the work of Home-Start

Chichester City Council recognises the work of Home-Start

On 6th February, Home-Start Chichester & District was honoured to be awarded a Community Award by Chichester City Council.

Councillor Judy Gershater read the citation for the Community Award on behalf of the Council, highlighting the important work that Home-Start staff and volunteers in Chichester and the surrounding district do every day to support families with young children who are struggling for a variety of reasons.

It was wonderful to have Home-Start’s work to support children and families recognised in this way, and also to stand alongside other organisations which are working to positively influence life in Chichester. These organisations included Sophie’s Legacy, Chichester Pride, the Theatre Department at the University of Chichester, and the volunteers at St Wilfrid’s Hospice.

Lois Rowlands, manager of Home-Start Chichester & District was pleased to accept the award from Chichester City Mayor Sarah Quail.

Visit to Rogate Pumpkin Patch

We were delighted to take our families from the North of Chichester District to Rogate Pumpkin Patch in October for a fun-filled day out.

The transport was kindly funded by Community Transport Sussex. Special thanks to Rogate Pumpkin Patch for offering free entry and a pumpkin to take home for every family.

The families were collected from Midhurst and taken by minibus to the Pumpkin Patch. Many of the families that getting to the Rogate Pumpkin Patch more difficult. The families had a wonderful time exploring all of the activities, enjoying the outdoors and making lasting memories for the children. We all sat together for a lovely snack time afterwards.

The impact of the trip was huge, with feedback from the parents suggesting that, for some, this would not have been possible without the support and generosity of our funders.

What parents said about the trip:

‘I was hoping that my little girl would fall asleep on the way home, but she was still so excited after the trip!’

‘Without Home-Start’s support, I would have been too anxious to do this alone.’

‘We feel confident to try this again with our older daughter now.’
