Seven new volunteers at Home-Start Chichester and District

Seven new volunteers at Home-Start Chichester and District

We were pleased to welcome seven new wonderful volunteers to our amazing volunteer team.

The volunteers have taken part in a seven week preparation course, which covers all aspects of volunteering with Home-Start; we discussed how to support and understand the needs of families and children, listening skills, early childhood development and the importance of play and positive parent-child relationships, safeguarding and boundaries and also how Home-Start operates as an organisation. The course is enjoyable and interactive, with plenty of opportunity to share and reflect upon the life experiences that make our volunteers so uniquely able to support families.

Home-Start volunteers do incredible work supporting families in their own homes, in a way that is often unseen by the wider community. Families who receive the support of a Home-Start volunteer often describe the experience as life changing or even lifesaving. It’s an amazingly rewarding volunteer experience and offers the chance for volunteers to make a real and life-long difference to people’s lives.

Volunteers can also:

  • Support families at our five family groups around the Chichester District
  • Support with local fundraising and community events
  • Provide one off support to families

Our next volunteer training course starts in January 2026. Places are limited to 8 people. The course lasts 7 weeks and takes place once a week on Tuesday mornings at the Chichester Family Hub.

Five new volunteers join Home-Start Chichester & District

Five new volunteers join Home-Start Chichester & District

We welcomed five new volunteers to our fantastic volunteer team this week

The volunteers took part in a seven week preparation course which covered all aspects of volunteering with Home-Start. We looked at the history and ethos of Home-Start, listening skills, how volunteers can help families, the importance of play for young children, the factors that make parenting difficult for families, sources of local support, safeguarding and the importance of confidentiality. The course is enjoyable and invites a lot of participation from everyone involved.

The volunteers will then choose to volunteer either in our popular and active family groups, or be matched with a family to support the family in their own home.

The next volunteer preparation course will be starting on the 9th September 2025, and we are in the process of receiving applications now.

Welcome to Five New Volunteers!

Welcome to Five New Volunteers!

We are really pleased to welcome five new fabulous volunteers to our incredible volunteer team.

The volunteers have completed a 7-week preparation course, which aimed to introduce them to Home-Start and the way in which we work with families to support them in their parenting. The volunteers will now be matched with family or support at one of our five Family Groups.

We invited all our existing volunteers to join us for a celebration lunch at Dell Quay Sailing Club..The weather was lovely (which makes a change for this June) and so we were able to eat outside. After lunch, we completed our annual safeguarding update. We gave all our volunteers – old and new – a geranium as a token of our thanks.

We are so grateful for the support, dedication, kindness and time that our volunteers give to Home-Start. It’s a unique volunteering opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of the families which they support.

Thank you!

Welcome to four new Volunteers!

Welcome to four new Volunteers!

We welcomed four new volunteers to our fabulous volunteer team at the end of February!

The volunteers took part in our 7-week Preparation Course, which took place weekly on Tuesday mornings. During the course, the volunteers were introduced to Home-Start as an organisation, and discussed the types of challenges families with young children might face. We looked at ways of supporting families in a way that is non-judgemental and empowering. We also discussed the importance of play in child development and child safeguarding.

The volunteers are already being matched with families and helping out at our Family Groups.

If you would like to support a local family with young children, our next volunteer preparation course starts on the 23rd April.

Volunteers’ Week

Volunteers’ Week

We welcomed three new volunteers to our volunteer team on the 6th June.

We also shared a lovely lunch with many of our long-term volunteers as a way of celebrating Volunteers’ Week 2023. Our volunteers are an essential part of the work that we do to support local families, and we couldn’t do it without them.

Volunteering Week

Volunteering Week

It’s Volunteers’ Week 1-7 June and here at Home-Start Chichester and District we’d like to extend a massive thank you to all of our volunteers who give their time and energy to support families and children in the Chichester District.

Below is what three of our amazing volunteers say about volunteering with Home-Start Chichester & District

‘I was aware of the work of Home-Start before I started volunteering because my daughter greatly benefitted from having someone visiting her when my two granddaughters were very young. I know how much they helped her to cope in those difficult, early days.

Over the years I have gathered a range of experiences and skills through working with children and families in my role as a qualified Nursery Nurse working in residential and day nurseries and as a registered childminder. I gave up childminding in 2000 to join the Early Childhood Service and worked for West Sussex County Council for 15 years in three different roles ending with running Children and Family Centres. During this time I worked with one of the Home-Start coordinators to ensure the families received a “joined up” service from the people working to support them.

When I was thinking of retiring, the first thing I did was to speak to Jan [a previous HSCD Coordinator] who offered me a place on the next preparation course where I met some amazing people. The support, courses and training are invaluable as are opportunities to meet other volunteers for peer support.

During the last four and a half years I have supported 10 families all with very different challenges and, although sometimes we do not always recognise the impact we have as volunteers, it is very pleasing to hear feedback from the coordinators the difference we are making to the lives of the families and their children.’

“I completed my training in April 2018 in which I met some lovely ladies and learnt a lot of information in order to enable me to be a good volunteer.

At the beginning Mum had issues with trust and I worked on that by just being there every week
and listening to her and just generally playing with the children. As we built our relationship Mum talked to me a lot about feeling isolated and how she found it hard going out with the all of the children. This had led her to being very isolated. Each week I take a different selection of puzzles, games and books and the children decide what they would like to do. Every week when I ring the doorbell I hear my name being shouted by the children and I love to hear that.

We have been out on several occasions over the school holidays with all of the children to the local park and it’s lovely to see the children out in the fresh air.

Being a Home-Start volunteer has been amazingly rewarding for me, even though I still find it hard to believe that my being there for just two hours a week can make so much difference to a family.

I look forward to continuing my work with them and the day they feel ready to say “thank you for all your visits but we feel ready for you to move on to another family.”

‘‘I have been a Home-Start Volunteer for approximately 6 months, and have worked with one
family since I completed my training course.

The biggest highlight for me is without a doubt getting a sense of satisfaction from directly helping a family. It is a good feeling to know that just helping with that task of getting 2 children to the park, or to play group, or playing at home, or aiding mum with a household job, can significantly improve the quality of the family’s day. Another great pleasure is watching the children develop, learn and change as the months go past. I enjoy having the time to stimulate their interest and learning in a way which perhaps has not been offered to them before.

In the summer holidays, we managed some whole days out, which was hugely helpful to the family as mum does not drive. Aldingbourne Country Centre was such a success, and both children loved their 2 days there, as indeed did I.

Although the focus is on the children, I find that the time spent chatting with mum, especially whilst walking to and from play group has been beneficial. She likes to offload her worries, and tell me about how the children have reacted and behaved (or not!) through the week. This is a great opportunity to praise mum for her skills and efforts. It also relieves the boredom for her, and we have chatted about many things going right back to her own childhood.

The support I have received from the supervisors has been wonderful. It is easy to discuss concerns. Communication with the team is good, and I like the option of attending training courses. I also like meeting other volunteers at Claire’s weekly play group.

I really have enjoyed my first 6 months as a volunteer, and have felt fulfilled, busy and useful. I have tolerated the abundance of snot and nappies, but have relished the baby cuddles, and the toddler imagination of finding dinosaurs in puddles!’
