Volunteers’ Week

Volunteers’ Week

We welcomed three new volunteers to our volunteer team on the 6th June.

We also shared a lovely lunch with many of our long-term volunteers as a way of celebrating Volunteers’ Week 2023. Our volunteers are an essential part of the work that we do to support local families, and we couldn’t do it without them.

Family Group trip to Dell Quay

Family Group trip to Dell Quay

On Tuesday, families who attend the Wednesday Family Group took part in a trip to Dell Quay, lead by the Chichester Harbour Conservancy.

We went for a walk along the harbour wall, past the famous Pink Boat, and enjoyed looking out at all the boats that were left in the harbour after the tide had gone out.  The Chichester Harbour Conservancy has an educational area for young children and when we arrived there, the children were encouraged to find leaves of different colours and were helped to make a leaf mobile.

Later on, the children took part in a treasure hunt, and were encouraged to explore the environment and find a range of different natural objects.  They could then make a little collage out of the things they found.

We hope to take more groups of children and parents along to Dell Quay over the new few weeks, as it’s a really lovely way to spend time together outside.

Storytelling with Luke

Storytelling with Luke

On Wednesday we were joined for the day by local actor and theatre teacher, Luke Osborne. In the morning, Luke led a group of volunteers in exploring ways to make their storytelling using children’s books engaging to even the most reluctant of listeners. He shared ways to engage children who were shy and maybe unused to the idea of sharing stories in a book. He also demonstrated ways to bring out the fun in books using voices and movement, and suggesting play and craft activities that can be done as follow on or even while the book is being shared with a child.

In the afternoon, Luke joined the family group and read two books with an underwater theme to the children. We then all took part in a making session inspired by these books and the children were proud to take home their creations.
